Location and climate
Location:
The Great Plains region is located mostly in the panhandle of Texas, which is the northernmost part of the state. It extends southward towards the border of Texas and Mexico. (See the yellow part of the map)
Climate:
The coolest temperatures in Texas can be found in the High Plains region! This region sees snow especially in the northern Panhandle. In the winter, “blue northers” blow in freezing winds all the way from Canada to the northern parts of Texas. The High Plains receives a good amount of rain each year, ranging from sixteen to twenty inches. The Spring can bring some wild weather to this region also. Tornados often form on the plains in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. People call this part of the United States “tornado alley.”

The Great Plains region is known for its cotton fields near Lubbock and ranches throughout the region because of the large amounts of open grassy land. Cattle, sheep, and goats have grazed for many years in the Great Plains regions. Midland and Odessa lead the state in production of oil and natural gas. Years ago, American Indians were able to find the flint they needed to make tools in the Alibates Flint Quarry located outside of Amarillo.
