location and climate
Location:
The Mountains and Basins region of Texas is located in the far west. Climate: The Mountains and Basins region has some areas that only receive eight inches of rain a year! That is less than one inch per month. Other regions in Texas can receive as much as twenty inches of rain in a year. The Mountains and Basins region is known to be dry and hot because it gets so little rain. The desert in west Texas is similar to the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. Some of the desert in this region forms part of the Chihuahuan (chuh•WAH•wahn) Desert. Despite the desert climate, the tops of some mountains in this region have cool forests. |

You can find desert plants like cacti, yuccas, and agaves. The lack of precipitation in this region makes it difficult for plants to grow. Mesquite is a tree-like bush that also grows in the Mountains and Basins region, in addition to pine trees.

This is the only region in Texas that has mountains such as the Chisos Mountains, the Davis Mountains, and Guadalupe Mountains. You can find Big Bend and Guadalupe Peak in the Mountains and Basins region. Reaching 8,749 feet high, Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas! The name of the region, Mountains and Basins, comes from these mountain ranges and the basins that are found in only this part of Texas. Basins are described as the low lands between the mountains.

Resources
Near the Rio Grande’s lower valley, grapefruit and oranges are grown there and then shipped to the rest of the country. Agriculture and oil are also resources found in Texas. Sheep and cattle are raised near the Pecos River by using an irrigation farming system. With low amounts of precipitation each year in this region, farming is difficult without an irrigation system. Oil and natural gas can be found along with wind energy plants. The sparsely populated land found in the Mountains and Basins region are perfect for capturing this alternative source of energy!
